What is orthodontics?
When people are unhappy with the position of their teeth, we can move the teeth using orthodontic appliances, commonly known as BRACES, to improve the appearance of their teeth.
What are the benefits of orthodontics?
An improvement in your smile is achieved without having to make any permanent changes, such as crowns or veneers which will need replaced in years to come. It is also easier to clean straight teeth which means your teeth and gums will be healthier and last for life. After your teeth are straight, you may wish to have them whitened to show off your new straight teeth with a whiter brighter smile.
How do braces work?
Braces apply a gentle force to the teeth which cause them to move to a new position in the mouth.
How long does treatment take?
Most orthodontic treatment takes about 12-18 months, followed by a retention period of up to 12 months. Visits are made at 6-8 week intervals to adjust the braces.
What type of braces are there?
1. Fixed braces are attached to the teeth and are made of stainless steel wires and brackets which apply a force to move the teeth to the new position. These are commonly called “train-tracks” because of their appearance.
2. Removable braces are made with plastic and stainless steel wires. These are used for simple orthodontic treatment.
3. Invisalign aligners are the ultimate in invisible braces. A series of clear, comfortable and removable plastic aligners are changed every 2 weeks at home. This means no one will know will know you're wearing them, less frequent visits to the dentist for adjustments and you can remove them to eat and clean your teeth. learn more
What are retainers?
Retainers are appliances worn once treatment is complete. Teeth must be held firmly while the gum and bone around the teeth strengthens holding them in the new position. Retainers can either be fixed permanently to the back of teeth called bonded retainers or plastic retainers which are removable for cleaning. The teeth can move back to the previous position if retainers are not worn as advised.
